Getting the Heat Right: PET Preforms and the Struggle with Scorching
If you’ve spent any time with Sidel SBO Series 2 or Husky HyPET systems, you know the headache. You need the center of the preform hot enough to blow, but you can’t burn the outside to a crisp. It’s a balancing act. If the heat doesn’t soak in deep enough, you end up with uneven walls and those annoying stress marks that make a bottle look cheap. The trick is all in the penetration. We don’t just make “bright” lamps. We’ve tweaked the quartz and the halogen refills to shift the energy into the shortwave IR band. Think of it like a punch. Instead of the heat just bouncing off the surface of the PET, it actually drives deep into the material. We also push a lot of power through a very small area. This creates a sharp thermal gradient, which is just a fancy way of saying it gets the job done faster. Your cycle times drop. But a heads-up: more heat means your oven’s ventilation has to work harder. If your blowers are dusty or clogged, you’re asking for trouble. You’ll risk cooking your oven components along with the plastic. No rewiring, no fuss. These are drop-in replacements. Whether your machine is a newer model or an old workhorse, we use the standard R7s or SK15 connectors. You just pop them in and go. We also reinforced the quartz glass. These things take a beating, jumping from room temperature to over 600°C in a heartbeat. They’re built to handle that shock without snapping. A few tips for the shop floor. Before you swap the lamps, take a look at your reflectors. If they’re pitted or oxidized, you’re basically throwing your money away. A high-power lamp can’t do its job if the light isn’t bouncing back into the bottle. And here is my biggest piece of advice:replace the whole bank. I know it’s tempting to just swap one dead tube, but don’t do it. Mixing old and new lamps creates “cold spots” in the oven. To compensate, you’ll probably crank up the power, which just kills your brand-new tubes faster. Just swap them all at once and get it over with.
