
Stop the Bubbles: Fixing Surface Skinning in Metal Coating
Ever deal with “skinning” when curing metal parts? It’s a nightmare. You use your standard IR lamps, the surface dries almost instantly, and it traps all those solvents underneath. Then, as those solvents fight to get out, they punch through the surface. You end up with bubbles or pinholes. It looks messy, and it’s a pain to fix. The trick is to stop thinking about heating the surface and start thinking about “inside-out” curing.
How it actually works
A lot of people try to fix this by just blasting the part with high-intensity shortwave radiation. But that just makes the problem worse. It hardens the “skin” before the base layer even gets warm. We do things differently. We tune our lamps to target the metal itself. See, metal sucks up IR energy fast. By tweaking the wavelength and power density, the heat shoots right through the coating and hits the metal first. The metal then acts like a battery, radiating heat back outward through the coating. The part cures from the bottom up. This keeps the surface open just long enough for the solvents to breathe and escape before the top layer locks everything in.
The balancing act
You can’t just crank the dial and hope for the best. It takes a bit of a feel for the wattage and voltage. If you go too heavy on the power, you’ll scorch the surface regardless of where the heat is coming from. Too light? The metal never gets hot enough to push that heat back out. You’ve also got to sync your lamp length and voltage with how fast your conveyor is moving. High-wattage tubes are great for thick metal, but they’re hungry. Just make sure your wiring and breakers can handle the peak draw, or you’ll be staring at a tripped breaker right when you’re ramping up.
Getting it right on the floor
The best part is that these lamps are designed to just drop right into your existing curing tunnels. No need to tear everything apart. But here is the one thing you can’t ignore:spacing. The distance between the lamp and the part is everything. If the lamp is too close, you’re right back to square one with surface skinning. Back it up a bit, and you get that deep penetration that actually works.
