
Dealing with Bubbles in Aluminum Wheel Powder Coating
If you’ve ever powder coated aluminum wheels, you know the frustration of pulling a rim out of the oven only to find tiny pinholes and bubbles staring back at you. It happens because aluminum is porous. It traps air and moisture inside the metal. When you crank up the heat too fast, those trapped gases panic. They expand and fight their way out, punching right through your curing powder on their way to the surface. We handle this with high-density shortwave infrared (IR) lamps. It’s all about how you control that heat.
Getting the Flow Right
Most people rely on standard convection ovens. They heat the air, and the air heats the part. It works, but it’s slow—way too slow if you’re trying to move a lot of volume. Our IR lamps are different. They shoot energy directly into the coating. Because we use a specific wavelength, we trigger something called “rapid leveling.” The powder melts and flows into a smooth, glass-like film before the chemical bond locks everything in place. If you move too slowly, those bubbles get trapped forever. The trick is hitting that sweet spot: enough heat to make the surface flow quickly, but not so much that you “boil” the gases out of the metal.
Taming the Heat
We build these lamps to deliver a serious thermal punch. The upside? You can make your curing tunnel a lot smaller. But look, IR isn’t a magic wand. If you just blast the lamps without proper zoning, you’ll end up scorching the surface while the core of the wheel is still under-cured. That’s a recipe for a failed finish. That’s why we wire them into a PID controller. It handles the timing. You want the coating to stay liquid just long enough for the air to escape, but not so long that the paint starts sagging down the sides of the rim.
The Hardware Side of Things
Here is the reality: high-wattage IR tubes get incredibly hot. You can’t just toss them into a random housing and hope for the best. Your reflectors have to be perfect. If the geometry is off, you’ll get hot spots on the rim that ruin the look. And a quick heads-up on the electrics—these lamps pull a ton of current. Make sure your power supply and cabling can actually handle the peak load. If you get a voltage drop mid-cycle, your cure is toast.
