
Getting the Heat Right in Husky HyPET Systems
If you’ve spent any time with high-speed PET blowing, you know the heating phase is where things usually go sideways. It’s the biggest bottleneck. When the preform doesn’t heat evenly—meaning the outside is scorching but the core is still cold—you end up with wonky wall thickness or, worse, bottles that just burst. That’s exactly why we built our infrared bulbs. We wanted to fix that penetration problem for anyone running Husky HyPET setups.
The trick to deep heating
Here is the thing: most standard lamps just waste energy on the surface. They burn the outside of the plastic while the middle stays stubborn. To fix that, we messed with the spectral output. By using specific quartz glass and halogen gas fills, we shifted the emission curve. Now, the infrared waves actually sink into the plastic wall instead of just bouncing off the top. We also pushed the wattage density. It sounds technical, but it basically means we’re cramming more power into a smaller space. It gets the preform to that critical glass transition temperature way faster. If you want to keep your cycle times tight without ruining your bottles, this is the only way to do it.
Installing the hardware
These are drop-in replacements. No fancy mods needed. Depending on your oven rack, we use R7s or Sk15 connectors, so they just slide right in. We also reinforced the quartz tubing. These bulbs take a beating. They heat up and cool down thousands of times a day, and that kind of thermal cycling kills cheap glass. Ours are built to last. But a quick heads-up on the voltage. Because these run at a higher wattage, your oven’s reflectors are going to feel more heat. If your reflectors are dirty or pitted, that heat bounces right back into the bulb and fries it. Keep them polished. It’s the only way to get the most out of the penetration.
A few trade-offs to keep in mind
More power means more heat in the oven. Simple as that. This puts a lot more pressure on your cooling blowers. Before you swap in these high-penetration bulbs, take a look at your airflow. If your oven can’t dump the extra ambient heat, you might find yourself overheating the mandrel or the preform neck. Just a bit of housekeeping to make sure everything runs smooth.
