
Can new infrared lamps actually wake up an old Sidel machine?
If you’re running an older Sidel blow molding line, you’ve probably noticed it’s starting to feel sluggish. The cycle speeds drop, the output dips, and it feels like the machine is just tired. Most people think the only way out is to drop a fortune on a brand-new machine. But honestly? You might just need better bulbs. Replacing those worn-out infrared lamps with updated specs can often bring back the speed you’ve been missing. It all comes down to heat. To get a PET bottle right, the preform needs a very specific thermal profile before it hits the mold. We use shortwave infrared halogen lamps because they punch through the plastic way faster than just blowing hot air around. But here’s the thing: lamps fade. If your tubes are looking dim or flickering, you’re losing heat density. When that happens, you’re forced to slow down the conveyor just to make sure the preform gets soft enough. That’s a productivity killer. The stuff that actually matters We design these lamps to be simple drop-in replacements. No fuss. We spend a lot of time on the wattage-to-voltage ratio so they play nice with your existing power rails. Now, a higher wattage tube means more heat flux, which is great for speed. But you’ve got to be careful. If you crank the wattage too high without checking your contactors, you’re asking for burnt-out wiring. We also use quartz glass with special coatings. Instead of letting heat bleed backward into the oven frame, it pushes everything forward into the preform. Plus, we use tight-fit connectors (usually R7s or Sk15) so you don’t have to worry about arcing when things get hot. The catch There is a trade-off. Faster heating means more heat soaking into the oven itself. If you switch to high-output tubes, you have to make sure your cooling fans are actually doing their job. If your vents are clogged with dust, the oven temperature will climb too high. That’s how you end up with “pearlization” or a preform neck that’s way too hot. Keep your fans clean, swap the lamps, and calibrate your zones. You’ll see those cycle times drop and get a lot more life out of the equipment you already own.
