If you’ve spent any time on a KHS line, you know the headache of uneven heating. One minute you’re dealing with wall thickness that’s all over the place, and the next, you’ve got that annoying pearlescence ruining your PET bottles. It’s a frustrating balancing act. You’ve got cold spots that make preforms burst, or hot spots that literally scorch the plastic. We got tired of seeing that happen, so we rebuilt our IR lamps to actually fill those gaps.
Why the heat acts up
Here’s the thing: most standard lamps have a problem we call “end-loss.” Basically, the heat just dies off near the connectors. We fixed this by changing how the filament is wound. By packing the tungsten coil more precisely across the quartz, we flattened out the temperature curve. Now, you get a steady, consistent heat footprint from one end to the other. The best part? You don’t have to crank the power to 11 just to fix a few weak spots. That means your lamps don’t burn out nearly as fast.
The nitty-gritty on fitment
You don’t need to rewire your machine or pray that these fit. These are drop-in replacements. We kept the physical dimensions and electrical loads exactly the same as the original KHS specs. We use high-purity quartz glass so the IR transmission is as clean as possible. And the connectors? We built them to handle high current without pitting or oxidizing, even when they’re cycling through heat all day and night.
A quick heads-up on the trade-offs
More heat density means faster cycle times. That’s the win. But keep in mind, pushing these lamps to their limit puts more stress on your oven housing. Check your exhaust fans. Make sure they’re clear and actually moving air. If your cooling system can’t keep up, the ambient heat builds up and messes with how the PET absorbs the IR. It can actually cancel out the uniformity you just gained. We build these to take a beating in 24/7 production. By tightening the tolerance on where that filament sits, we make sure the heat hits the preform exactly where the mold needs it. Simple as that.
